Chapter Eighteen

“What?” Deanna whips her head around. She finds an empty back seat.

Only I can see her. The Red Reaper, or rather, her soul, is in the backseat of my car.

“I promise I’ll explain everything, but we have to pull over for a second.”

“And then where are we going?” I stop the car on the side of the road, hands clenched around the steering wheel.

The Red Reaper continues cursing me out beneath her hood. “Portland. I have to pick up a friend.”

The misty air hits my lungs as I step out of the car. I wait for the calm that the mist usually brings me, but it never comes.

The Red Reaper is beside me, still cursing. “I’m sorry.” I face away from the car so that Deanna can’t see my lips moving. “I didn’t want you to die.” My voice catches in my throat. “I just wanted you to stop.”

She scoffs derisively. “I’m not the first and I won’t be the last. You will die.”

“Why?” Even in death her face is obscured beneath the hood. “Why do you want me dead?”

She takes a step towards me. If she were alive, her breath would be casting a chill down my spine. “That.”

The mark burns into my skin. Not in the present but rather the memory of it. The pain. My fingers soaked in Aaron’s blood. “I didn’t want this!” I turn on her. “I didn’t want any of this. If I could give it up, I would!”

“Then give it up,” she spits.

I gaze into the spot where her eyes would be beneath the hood desperately. There’s a way out of this? “How?”

“Send me on and I can help you.”

Before I can think, my hand is on my mark and I’m meeting her amber brown eyes. She grabs an orb without thinking. The soft orangey glow turns red sharply. “Wait!” I shout. She merely laughs and allows the red light to zip down her body in silence.

I stand there, frozen, staring at the spot where she stood. Deanna is beside me now. “What’s wrong?” My head whips around, fixing on the edge of the cliff several hundred feet behind us. “Jade?”

A strangled cry pierces the foggy air. “We have to go. Now. Get back in the car.”

“And then answers?”

I nod, slamming the driver’s side door shut. We take off again.

Deanna allows me a whopping two minutes of silence to gather my thoughts. “So?”

“I—I don’t know how to start this, Deanna.”

“Just tell me already.”

“The woman, in the red cloak.” I clench my jaw. “She killed Aaron.”

A pregnant pause fills the car. “How do you know?”

“She wants to kill Reapers.” I pull my hair aside and turn to show her the mark.

Deanna studies it closely. “Aaron had that tattoo. She wants to kill people who like a band?” Her voice is filled with skepticism.

“No. Reapers, Grim Reapers. Except there’s more than one. Aaron was a Reaper too. When he died, he transferred it to me. I didn’t believe it at first either. I—um . .
