Chapter Eighteen
âWhat?â Deanna whips her head around. She finds an empty back seat.
Only I can see her. The Red Reaper, or rather, her soul, is in the backseat of my car.
âI promise Iâll explain everything, but we have to pull over for a second.â
âAnd then where are we going?â I stop the car on the side of the road, hands clenched around the steering wheel.
The Red Reaper continues cursing me out beneath her hood. âPortland. I have to pick up a friend.â
The misty air hits my lungs as I step out of the car. I wait for the calm that the mist usually brings me, but it never comes.
The Red Reaper is beside me, still cursing. âIâm sorry.â I face away from the car so that Deanna canât see my lips moving. âI didnât want you to die.â My voice catches in my throat. âI just wanted you to stop.â
She scoffs derisively. âIâm not the first and I wonât be the last. You will die.â
âWhy?â Even in death her face is obscured beneath the hood. âWhy do you want me dead?â
She takes a step towards me. If she were alive, her breath would be casting a chill down my spine. âThat.â
The mark burns into my skin. Not in the present but rather the memory of it. The pain. My fingers soaked in Aaronâs blood. âI didnât want this!â I turn on her. âI didnât want any of this. If I could give it up, I would!â
âThen give it up,â she spits.
I gaze into the spot where her eyes would be beneath the hood desperately. Thereâs a way out of this? âHow?â
âSend me on and I can help you.â
Before I can think, my hand is on my mark and Iâm meeting her amber brown eyes. She grabs an orb without thinking. The soft orangey glow turns red sharply. âWait!â I shout. She merely laughs and allows the red light to zip down her body in silence.
I stand there, frozen, staring at the spot where she stood. Deanna is beside me now. âWhatâs wrong?â My head whips around, fixing on the edge of the cliff several hundred feet behind us. âJade?â
A strangled cry pierces the foggy air. âWe have to go. Now. Get back in the car.â
âAnd then answers?â
I nod, slamming the driverâs side door shut. We take off again.
Deanna allows me a whopping two minutes of silence to gather my thoughts. âSo?â
âIâI donât know how to start this, Deanna.â
âJust tell me already.â
âThe woman, in the red cloak.â I clench my jaw. âShe killed Aaron.â
A pregnant pause fills the car. âHow do you know?â
âShe wants to kill Reapers.â I pull my hair aside and turn to show her the mark.
Deanna studies it closely. âAaron had that tattoo. She wants to kill people who like a band?â Her voice is filled with skepticism.
âNo. Reapers, Grim Reapers. Except thereâs more than one. Aaron was a Reaper too. When he died, he transferred it to me. I didnât believe it at first either. Iâum . .
